Rules of transcription:

1. Provide as much detail about the document as an object/artifact before you transcribe the text.

2. Retain (or indicate) line breaks from original document.

3. Indicate deletions/insertions in the text using footnotes – this preserves elements of the letter which Davy “corrected”, but his original thoughts might provide insight into his train of thinking.

4. Take a digital copy of the manuscript where possible allow you to revisit where possible!

5. Indicate  where there is doubt over transcription of a word.

6. Indicate which parts of the manuscript have been crossed out by the author but remain legible.

7. Avoid marking the manuscript!
