Some questions to ask of/ about manuscripts:

1.  Why are things crossed out?

2.  Why are different types of crossing out?

3.  Why is the correct year crossed out and then re-written by the archivist (?)

4. Here are our four questions:
a) What is the provenance of this document?
b) to whom is it addressed?
c) with what authority does it speak?
d) how is it situated? Is it part of a ialogue? Is it typical of his correspondance (for eg)?

5. Four key questions for the text:

(a) Where did the archive obtain the letter from?

(b) Was there any response to this letter from Dalton? Can it be found?

(c) Is this letter part of a series or collection?

(d) What were the contemporary conventions?
